Did you really test this in just ten minutes and was it smoking just as much?
I think you need to drive it at least a few miles before you can tell for sure.
Otherwise it might be worth trying another oil, not sure why but there's been lots of users claiming excessive oil consumption with Mobil.

You could have a few things causing the problem,, oil 0-40 not the best for a high miler (cheapest to try ), valve stem seals is a possibility and they are near perfect symptoms for description although a few have changed them to no avail (the next option if the first doesn't work) or oil control rings (big bucks and full strip down) this is all providing you have tried the PCV as suggested and you aren't over full on oil

Thanks everyone for your advice much appreciated! yeah I literally popped the pcv pipe off and blanked the intake and drove home from work and was still doing it but I'll give it some time, I'll change my oil on the weekend and see if that changes anything, anyone got any recommendations what oil to try?

any decent 5w40 will do fine, everyone has their favorite like mine is Driven DT40 which is designed for high revving cars but hela expensive from the likes of millers or castrol.

Filter the search on opies to 5w40 and pick the bottle you like best

Check the handbook for oil as well , now reason in a moderate climate like ours that you can't use 10/40 I have on occasion in the past and oil consumption did reduce slightly. I think there is a chart or such like in the handbook with recommendations.
