WRONG.
As of 1984 the GM had sold 750,000 Corvettes

The 1 millionth Vette was made in '92

I know the Miata is in the book but it's not the best selling sports car. We can argue if the Mustang counts but the Corvette certainly does.

I talked to a GM insider, the solstice is still not in production yet, but it scheduled to start in the next week or 2. Current cars are pre-productions cars.
And if you live in detroit or windsor, DAH of course you might see them! GM has built about 50+ pre-production models for testing.

Firstly the mustang is NOT a sports car IMO.
Secondly sports car can be interpreted strictly as a 2-seat convertible that leaves the vette vert behind the miata.
I know a lot of people call a M3 or a Mustang a sports car but IMO anything with 4 seats is not a sports car with the only exception of a 911.

I would argue that the Mustang could be considered a sports car but that's a different conversation. Really it's a very subjective definition. The Mustang has many eliminates of a sports car even if the Fox bodied version was kept around way to long. I think you would have to pick a very narrow definition of sports car to leave out the Vette but include the 911. Given the 911 has rear seats I think it would be hard to come up with a definition that includes it but doesn't include the Mustang.
I also said that if we use the roadster definition (2 seats, drop top or no top)of a sports car then the Miata is the best seller in the world. Then again if I redefine roadster to exclude cars with roll up side windows and attached convertible top frames then the Miata is out.
If I define sports cars as road cars with 2 seats and engines that rev to at least 8200 RPM I think the S2000 is the best seller ever.
Basically, I think it's nothing more than a half truth to call the Miata the best selling sports car as the Corvette has clearly out sold it. I suspect the 911 has also outsold it but I'm not going to try to find the numbers. I suspect most people would include the Corvette and 911 in the sports car category.
