Never seen/heard Greta Thunberg purring! Anything but.

A bit off topic here but I am looking beyond the e Cars - and the lengthy charging times / scarcity of charging points - at liquid hydrogen powered fuel cell cars.

Apart from getting your car frozen to the fill up nozzle the idea of filling up in the same length of time as fossil fuel appeals to me.

James May owns one - though whether that is a good thing or a bad thing is moot

Still a bit of work to be done on fuel cell degradation - they're not making the 5,000 hours unscathed ATM.

The GM/Honda and Honda/Isuzu tie-ups ought to help sort that one in the fullness of time.

James May's Tesla/Mirai comparo is his usual informative watch - and I usually detest watching vids.

Re the ID3 - from Electrive:...Volkswagen plans the same equipment lines for France and Germany, so the information from the French document should also be relevant for the market launch in Germany. In addition to the order and delivery schedule, a new technical detail is of particular interest. According to the leaked information, the heat pump is supposed to provide a range gain of 60 kilometres for the ID.3 with medium battery option (58 kWh). This is, after all, a considerable percentage of the total range of up to 420 kilometres and almost makes up the difference between the small 45 kWh and the medium 58 kWh battery on its own.

The installation of a heat pump helps to save energy in winter conditions and thus indirectly gains range. The Volkswagen specification of 60 kilometres range gain refers to an outside temperature of +5 to -10 degrees Celsius. It is not clear how much customers have to pay for the heat pump in the freely configurable series models...

Gives one an indication of the problem of keeping the organic matter warm. Perhaps they should fit one of those Eberspächer diesel heaters they use for truck sleeper cabs...

we all know Germans are habitual liars

i expect the id3 to have a range of 250 miles +/- 150 miles

the cold has a very significant effect on my buddies T3 in Montreal.. coupled with the frameless doors ripping off trim due to icing he has to warn the car he wants to go out 30 mins before he does.

Warn, or warm? Both, probably - it's a Tesla.

Yes, it would kill the range to warm it from the battery, but of course if it's not been plugged in/failed to charge, he's got a problem.

Some of these allegedly 'premium' ICEs have the option to do likewise (you know, the ones with the posh -and cold- PVC seats instead of the warmer cloth the poverty cars have) and having a diseasel clanking away for 30 mins must really annoy the neighbours.

Teslas are the best-selling cars in Norway, largely as a result of Gov't boondoggles. California I can understand (365-sunshine & loony lefties) but Norway..?

Norway feel guilt for flooding the world with oil which is then burnt producing co2 which causes australia to catch fire even if they deserve it for flooding asia with coal..
its a tax and infra thing over there as you say. Teslas are cheap and i dont mean just build quality.

in the US a tesla cost 35k USD and avg salary in cali as an example is 65k

here they are 35k but average wage in london is.. 34k and outside 22k.. so they are twice the price.

That's generally been the case with ICEs too in US. Then again, there is a huge wealth disparity between states, so it's perhaps more akin to the whole of Europe.

Of course, California being the most socialist state (yet still for the present, wealthy) distorts matters even further.

I an really enjoying that no-one seems to get the Honda Eezer Goode, though!

ETA: There is a hilarious thread on a well-known fossil-minded site, where those who clearly have researched JS about FA are giving their 2ps...

it is an interesting one

do i buy one size fits all and the compromise that brings versus something which is better for 99% of my use

as you can see by what is on the road and popular at the minute most people buy massive, horrible tanks in what Clarkson calls an automotive arms race

i ran basic numbers of 5 years of BM vs the e at what we know now rates, assuming no breakdowns, excluding tyres

BM £15.6k
e £2.3k

excl residuals.

i do feck all miles.. the e is about 10% cost of the BM in 'fuel' and probably 25pc servicing..

cost to change about £12k i guess
