Misguided Boxster Owners
I must have too much time on my hands.
Okay, to stir the turds a bit...one of the things people on this board say is that "most/all of us could have afforded Boxsters if we wanted one, which we didn't". Seems to me like there are an awful lot of young turks on this board. And there is a heck of a payment difference between $35K a year and $55k a year (assuming a Boxster S with minimal add-ons).
I am sure there are folks who could have bought either, but does that apply to most?
PS "turks" is not short for turkey. If you don't know what it means, ask your parents.
heehee

Maybe some of us could afford the Boxster, just not the mechanics to keep 'em running =) .. nor aftermarket parts for the mod addicts here.. did you know TechArt sells two boxster bodyKITS at 35K each?

Although the rest of his post is drivel, I actually agree with the small segment above. If a Boxster S was $32,700 with the sport suspension, litronics, sport seats, cruise control and a CD player I'd be on it in a heartbeat. But it's not. More like $56,000 with that equipment. And the slower, older, spanked-on-the-track-by-an-S2000 2.5 or 2.7 Boxster STILL cost $15,000 more.
The S2000 is a tremendous bargain at MSRP. As many have pointed out, it is unlikely that Honda will ever recoup their costs on this gift to their customers. Porsche, on the other hand, has made enough on the Boxster to turn the company around. At the expense of the customer. Nothing wrong with that; that's the way the world works.
And that extra $23,000... I'm planning on buying many track days with tires, one-on-one driving instruction, a new BMW R1150GS to replace my R1100GS, and a two semi-long vacations for me and my significant other, who really could care less about sports cars but sure likes lounging on a secluded tropical beach.
Don't be too hard on the Boxster guys though... Went on a local drive with seven Boxsters last weekend. A fun bunch who knew their cars and knew how to drive. And there is more than one local S2000 owner around here who I can't get out to the track or even discuss S2000's with.

Very simply, people who buy the S2000 are mostly those that could afford a much more expensive car, but think they are getting a great deal (even with the dealer upcharges)...a so called rational price/performance buyer.

You know, I have yet to meet a Boxster owner in person that wanted to discuss their car at all. Most casual meetings on the street result in these guys avoiding eye contact while I admire their Boxster. I have met several owners of practically every other model of Porsche that have stopped me to talk about our cars. Seems strange to me that the subset of Porsche owners that can afford the likes of the most expensive models would have any interest at all in a Honda. A recent encounter at the grocery store parking lot found me engaged in serious discussions about tires for the 911 and how they perform at autocross events. This guy was very friendly. He had stopped in the crosswalk and gave me a thumbs up. Maybe the common thread is some of these guys have been to the track. (Our significant others were kind enough to put up with the car talk.)
As for my choice I prefer the S2000 for many reasons that matter to me and I don't care if anyone else approves or agrees. While the Boxster is a terrific automobile I was just looking for something more powerful than my Miata that I wouldn't see at every Starbuck's. Now if I can just ignore the folks that claim Honda copied the Z3...

When they encounter someone who is more performance-minded than brand-conscious, such as an S2000 owner, it makes them feel uncomfortable.
It's hard to rationalize spending a huge premium for something as intangible as "brand value".
