another blown 2nd gear thread
The problem with the "just replace them as they break" theory is that you never really beat on your car because of it. I went through that whole thought process myself and then just broke down and bought the v160.
Well I'd buy your damn Nissan tranny if I knew it would fit good
blah
It's interesting that there are people making 600+ in second gear yet others break them.....
I'm a pretty hard core JEEP/YOTO offroad guy, I know that the same is true with wheeling rear ends and such. Some people break nearly everything while other's make it last. The ones who break stuff don't necessarily win more either.
I would bet the single most stressful moment on a tranny gear is dumping the clutch to accomplish essentially a very hard instant compression break. Note the load is in REVERSE on the drive-train parts. The rear end especially won't appreciate this move and doing it often will cause failure of both tranny/axles/diff/etc. prematurely no doubt. I'm not saying that's why people are breaking them but keep in mind snapping something that has been loaded in one direction a long time is always easier to break in the other direction. **Just something to keep in mind**
That all said, spending 7k or so on a transmission for this car is asinine. I'm sorry but the car can be had for 15k, spending half that on a transmission alone is ridiculous. Go buy a Z06 Vette by the time you've gone FI and bought a transmission and you'll be smashing on s2k's all day long. Hell, some people on here are easily deep enough in to have a GTR and at that point, same story.
I can understand if it's a track toy, I can see putting far more money than that into something but there's a point of diminishing returns on a car and the S2000's magic number is probably under 500whp in terms of money for your laptimes. Granted it's a fun car, it's why I have one and mine too is FI.
A better solution would be stronger gears, specifically straight-cut gears rather than helical if someone could accomplish that for our transmission we'd be in heaven.... I of course know the complications that make it so hard. However, in pipe dream land it'd be nice having 20% stronger gears from that change alone. Hell even some better quality gears would be nice and a taller 6th too!!! 155mph is rather pathetic when we've got 600+ on tap.
I'm going to drive it, if I blow a transmission up I'll have it swapped out in 2 hrs or so and around $800-1000 bucks or so. I've not had trouble coming up on transmissions for the ap2 even. I find it difficult to put over 450whp down in 2nd gear anyway, it's worth giving up that small bit because for $7k I could invest that money in other parts that would make up the small decrease in hp in that particular gear and net better laptimes overall.
