another blown 2nd gear thread
It's interesting that there are people making 600+ in second gear yet others break them.....
I'm a pretty hard core JEEP/YOTO offroad guy, I know that the same is true with wheeling rear ends and such. Some people break nearly everything while other's make it last. The ones who break stuff don't necessarily win more either.
I would bet the single most stressful moment on a tranny gear is dumping the clutch to accomplish essentially a very hard instant compression break. Note the load is in REVERSE on the drive-train parts. The rear end especially won't appreciate this move and doing it often will cause failure of both tranny/axles/diff/etc. prematurely no doubt. I'm not saying that's why people are breaking them but keep in mind snapping something that has been loaded in one direction a long time is always easier to break in the other direction. **Just something to keep in mind**
That all said, spending 7k or so on a transmission for this car is asinine. I'm sorry but the car can be had for 15k, spending half that on a transmission alone is ridiculous. Go buy a Z06 Vette by the time you've gone FI and bought a transmission and you'll be smashing on s2k's all day long. Hell, some people on here are easily deep enough in to have a GTR and at that point, same story.
I can understand if it's a track toy, I can see putting far more money than that into something but there's a point of diminishing returns on a car and the S2000's magic number is probably under 500whp in terms of money for your laptimes. Granted it's a fun car, it's why I have one and mine too is FI.
A better solution would be stronger gears, specifically straight-cut gears rather than helical if someone could accomplish that for our transmission we'd be in heaven.... I of course know the complications that make it so hard. However, in pipe dream land it'd be nice having 20% stronger gears from that change alone. Hell even some better quality gears would be nice and a taller 6th too!!! 155mph is rather pathetic when we've got 600+ on tap.
I'm going to drive it, if I blow a transmission up I'll have it swapped out in 2 hrs or so and around $800-1000 bucks or so. I've not had trouble coming up on transmissions for the ap2 even. I find it difficult to put over 450whp down in 2nd gear anyway, it's worth giving up that small bit because for $7k I could invest that money in other parts that would make up the small decrease in hp in that particular gear and net better laptimes overall.

I hear what you're saying, however its a slow progression towards total addicition/moneypit etc. For me, taking off the airbox cover off (mostly for sound) was like a crackheads first puff of marijuana. It started slowly, then progressed where I am now, the car would be complete with just one more hit
, that hit being the mostly costly (transmission)At the end of the day, sure it's probably the worst money I have ever spent, but having a 600hp S2000 that you can beat the shit out of is pretty appealing. Yea, I could be in a GTR, but again, it was a slow dumping of money, not one huge hit like a GTR would be (which would be modded to the same extent, albiet much muhcu more expensive
Some Food for Thought...Manual Transmission dont break when you are in gear, They Break when you power-shift into the next gear. If you do anything else other driving your S2K on the Streets, aka dragracing, road racing ect then make sure to have plenty of money and tranny's. What I'm saying is, Dont race your car and dont expect shit to brake. Welcome to Hot Rodding! When you Hot rod your Daily Driver, shit is going to break, Period.
The way you shift has everything to do if your trannsmission is going to hold or not. I can have 250 whp and still brake the transmission, I can also have 600whp and shift so it wont. I suppose you could just install a Supra Transmission and race the snot out of it.

s2k trans is glass. they break mid gear once you go over 400ishwtq
How much torque does a stock motor make? Around 150wtq right? So a tranny is glass if it breaks when 2.5x the power is put through it then it was designed for?

i know. i thought about that after i posted it, but they also break stock power. they grind, dont like money shifts. i guess i am just spoiled cause the motor is stout, and the drivetrain cant keep up with it thats all.
Good point. I think people were just spoiled by older FWD honda trannies. The trannies could take a shitload of abuse and power and just keep running.
FYI, for anyone that wants to track it (1/4) and is on stock Diff and tranny, you can def go out and have a lot of fun, I have over 25+ passes at 635 450 ft of trq. Just pre-load the diff (I can get it down to 1.7xx 60ft and dont slam the gears, just shift fast, lotsa a fun
Are there any warning signs during normal driving of 2nd gear about to go? My 04 has 30k on it. During the first 20k I banged from 1st to 2nd fairly hard and regularly (not dramtically hard, but defintely hard), but I never missed a shift, grinded gears, etc. Been SC'd since around 1k. 5lbs boost until 15k, 8 lbs/310 rwhp since.
Sometimes, but not often, I get a slight sticking feeling from 2nd when just tooling around at low speeds, low rpms, and trying to shift out of 2nd. I don't recall that in the earlier miles. It doesn't take much to get it out when it happens. This isn't the cold weather, not warmed up pop out thing. Happens in any conditions. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, given 2nd gear with this car.
I've since cooled down on how I drive and never get on it from 1st to 2nd anymore. I just wait until I'm in 2nd and go from there. The 4.55 gears help with that. But I do sometimes go kinda hard from 2nd to 3rd. Any issues with that, even if done smoothly?
My budget has changed dramatically since 20k miles, due to kids,a college budget etc, so lately I'm in safe mode because I don't want anything to break..lol. Should I be worried?
Thanks
