Lainey try a farm or heavy equipment store that sells tractor tires. Calcium Chloride is used in those to add weight.

PS One virtue of cooler weather is MY SUPERCHARGER LOVES IT!!!

Got my sneakers on right now working inside for the moment woo hoo! Have to break up an old mound of ice with a sledge this afternoon so I'll be back in boots later and we have a storm coming with 3-6 forecast but my feet are happy right now!

Scraped about half of the parking area on my driveway down to pavement again. Hope to do the other half tonight. Made a big improvement on the ice dams by sprinkling calcium chloride over them.

Prediction for -30 windchill again tomorrow.
We are on the hunt for calcium chloride. Got some good ice dams going and maybe rain coming in this weekend. That will make a heck of a mess.

Temps have moderated a bit. 25 degrees feels warm!
I know I saw this here somewhere...Put the calcium chloride in a leg of panty hose and put it vertically across the ice dam. This will create a channel for the water to drain off your roof.

Do not spread the CaCl across your ice dam loosely. The amount you would need to melt the entire dam would be too much. Remember that CaCl is corrosive to roofing nails and untreated aluminum plus it will kill evergreens and grass.

Good luck.

Thanks, Scooter. We will be using the panty hose application. At last a good use for panty hose!

Could you post pics, please, Lainey? I have never heard of this and am curious as to how it works.

for the record it works pretty well.
I might be doing it tonight since I'm getting tired of climbing up and busting the ice dams.
