number 14 in this image
the distance between 12 and 5 needs to be greater when compressed than the distance between the bottom of the threads and the point at which those pieces rest on the shaft (the little lip on the shaft)
I think by 5 you mean 6 (the # is distorted). 5 is the shock itself. The top and bottom bushing should both be #6

yes, so basically the top bushing since they're the same number thanks for the correction

There's no issues with keeping everything centered? Does your setup have slack with everything fully drooped (with the whole car off the ground, or no swaybars)?

I plan on installing mine tomorrow with 2.5" spring in the OEM tophats... I'm hoping its not an issue.

I figure if I secure bump stops at the top of the shaft, as far as I recall, they fill the spring ID pretty well and wouldn't let it move a whole lot.

Darn, I thought I was the only Laguna with bronze rims. Fast color, slow/noob driver here.

This was my first National Tour and I was definitely humbled by Matt G (glagola1) in his S and Jason Minehart in his Miata. Any suggestions on entry level shocks & springs to get? I'm still on stock stuff but I don't have the money to purchase Motons.

My whole setup cost about 1800... not as good as Motons but definately gets the job done.

They are revalved Koni yellows with coilover sleeves, upper spring perch and my own spring rates

Did you remove the sleeve that goes in-between the two rubber bushings with molded washers on the top hat or is it still in?
I did not explain what I tried, I only put up what I thought the symptom source is (axle rattle due to lowering).

Here's what was tried but made no difference:
- add washer under top nut to ensure top/bottom bushings (#6/6) are making solid contact with the sleeve (#14)
- remove the sleeve (#14)

I would also think that the washer (#8) would be clamped down if the first item above is achieved.

Whoa, you're running 2.5" springs inside of stock tophats? That's probably what's moving around on bumps.
What about the springs in those top hats would make a rattle? Jacked up there is no slack. This is due to the bushing pre-load. With the car on the ground there is even more spring pressure into the top hat. I have the rubber in place inside the top hat.

I put the sleeves back in when I switched everything over to the Blue car. I was tires of stripping the shock shaft because I didn't know how much torque I was applying when compressing the bushings.

I'm going to go with sphericals up there in the next month or so anyway so it won't be for a very long time. I never noticed any knocking on the Koni's I ran for 1.5yrs or on the Penske's so far. I also didn't notice any knocking when I just let the 2.5" spring sit in the stock upper hats.
I ran the Koni's with the same sleeves for 4 years in stock class without any sound. That's one reason I question the lowering aspect of the equation which may tie in with the axles.

If there is anything else to try please let me know. I am living with it for now. The interesting part is it sounds similar on both sides and only in the rear. At some point I may change the upper perch/top hat arrangement to pillow ball and Penske type upper spring perch.

Thanks

woohooo... I finally have bump travel!

I got some weld-on spherical bearing cups from www.chassisshop.com and modified some old CRX shock hats (thanks Leach) to move my penske adapter up:

The second to last picture is at ride height after I lowered the car about 1". I still ahve about 1.6" of shock travel before it contacts the bumpstop, which should be about 2" of wheel travel. I was REALLY sitting up like a monster truck before tonight.

It was probably about $100 for the two rears including the RSW bumpstop from resuspension.com.

Off to a TnT tomorrow... hopefully getting the shocks off of the bumpstops will cure some of my mid-corner uncertainty.

Sweet! Yah the rear end definitely needed that travel man. But it was still a blast playing with it last weekend. I will be at the test n tune as well if you need help setting that thing up quick.
