You must be thinking stock class Corey. I can barely get a water sprayer nozzle over the top of the tire. We ended up doing the car wrap at nationals. If you have painters tape it works reasonably well to keep it in place and from blowing away. Having friends in grid to help out is recommended.
If you can only get the 4ft roll it can be cut in half with a saw before taking the wrapping off.

Pros don't allow for tire covers or anything similar while in grid/running.

Keep in mind this is illegal at National events. You can have tire covers, but you cannot wrap the car and trap the heat. If you cover the tires, you cannot have the car running. These rules came directly from the grid chief at Lincoln after someone threatened to protest me over the tire covers. I expect we will have a clear explanation of the rules for tire covers at National events this year. If not, I will certainly ask.

Funny how when you work your @$$ to the top that others try to find ways to bring ya down. If they are going to complain about you, they should go through the trouble of zinging everyone else...Well... at least they warned ya before filing a complaint... I'll give 'em that. grumble... grumble...

That seems a little confusing. Here's what the rules have been:
Individual tire blankets are allowed. You may have the engine on with the covers in place.
A fence around the whole car is allowed. You may not have the car running with a fence in place. That is considered "active heating", which is forbidden by the rules.
---
Commentary: With some cars, even the individual covers seem to be able to trap the hot air coming through the fender wells from the engine. Although one could consider that to also be active heating, so far it has been allowed. I am not aware of a protest of that configuration, which in my mind leaves it as an unresolved question.

Thanks for the clean answer John. I agree.
To help this discussion on tire insulator use in grid I wrote an email to solotech@scca.com asking for clarification. I would not want any one to be confused and not have the same competitive opportunity at a national tour or national championship. The last part of the answer below is refering to active heating which is clearly against the rules as described in 6.11 in the 2011 Solo Rules.
Question Asked
Are tire insulators (passive) allowed to be used in grid between runs at
solo national tours or national championship events? These typically
come in the form of insulated tire bags, tire covers made from silver
bubble wrap insulation, a fence that goes all the way around the car
made from silver bubble wrap insulation.
Answer from SCCA SoloTech
Yes, the insulators you are talking about are allowed to be used in
grid. As long as there is nothing to help get the tires warmer.
