I would be very careful about getting a carfax. Ive bought so much stuff on craigslist including cars that I have gotten pretty decent at reading people. I went to see a car yesterday that was advertised as having 61k miles and the odometer showed that. came home ran a carfax and it had 9 owners! and it was at like 170k miles or somewhere around there that LAST time it was reported to the DMV. shady f@#ker..

Still. That car has been mangled at some point in it's life. Lots of unseen damage, I'm sure.

Yeah, I just figured the 4k price tag made it worth the risk, more or less. But maybe not.
Idk. It seems he doesnt want to take a deposit, because "It will be gone in a week"

As for salvage titled car. Each insurance company is different. Majority of insurance companies will give you anywhere from 35-55% of the value, be it that they use NADA, KBB, or local cars on the market or lastly an ACV (Actual cash value). I've heard of a few insurance companies denying any sort of payment for salvage cars after a total loss or be iffy on repairs because the extent of damage history (why it was salvaged) or how many times its been deemed salvage or been in an accident. Its tricky. It's a lot of money to risk not getting it back from Full Coverage something happens. Imagine paying 13k and not getting a penny for it or half that. I've also from a forum that someones salvaged S2000 was given full value (I can't deny or agree with that claim)

Best bet is to get one out of an auction that you know how its been damaged. It'll run much cheaper, even less than half how much hes asking and if its totalled, you could easily part it out and make your money back.

FYI to the above post - I've owned two salvage title Civics that were then claimed total losses by my insurance company (one wrecked by another motorist and one stolen then wrecked by the thief) and both times I was given the full NADA value of the car. No discounting due to the branded title. I had full coverage through State Farm on those vehicles. It is very wise to check with your insurance agent prior to purchasing a salvage title car to see what their policy is though. Not just on pay out value for total loss cases, but also to make sure they will pay out a comparable value for other items like vandalized tops, stolen seats, the common S stuff that gets claimed.

That's why I said some insurance companies. I would say most insurance companies won't give full value. Its just a risk some people take without asking their insurance companies. But that's awesome that State Farm did that.

I found a 2005 S2000 white/tan interior with 113K miles on it. The seller is looking to trade for a sedan with good MPG. I offered him my 09 Civic lx-s with 80K worth 10.5K and 2K on top of the trade. You guys think that's a good deal? He has a brand new soft top with no modification to the car.
