-Official- Is this car worth it thread - vol. 2
You'd have to selectively remember the second sentence and forget the third that you quoted to get that impression.
Please see all other threads on pricing. Use the guides and comps.
If it needs a new top, tires, bodywork etc. it's not worth as much.
I think he's saying that inherently the 12-year-old tires will require replacement and it is very unlikely that the current owners have changed them out since the car has so few miles.
You can extend this assumption to pretty much every other part on the car: they are probably all original and thus a dozen years old. These parts will be prone to breaking sooner than those of a 2008 car, for example. This is why the '00 car will inherently be less reliable than the '08. Sure we're still talking about a Honda and it will likely provide minimal problems, I just don't see why this would command a premium when somebody could opt for an ultra-low-mile '03 or a mid-low mile 07-09 for the same money.

It is apparent that I need to clarify the point I intended to make. I was referring to the tires and to the tires alone. It's a matter of chemistry and meeting environmental impact standards. Modern tires have an accelerated breakdown rate as a result of meeting mandated guidelines, or so I've heard. It makes sense. I have witnessed it. I will not keep a tire longer than 6 years. Call me crazy if you wish, but tires are a critically important component of one's automobile. This little car is a blast to drive, but having fun with it imposes high demands on the tires. To do so with compromised (by age or design) tires is asking for trouble, IMO. Of course, for this car I don't have to worry about keeping tires for very long. The backs last me about 10K miles of
.
I commented about 12 year old tires being worthless because I am genuinely concerned for the well being of all who buy these wonderful little roadsters. The importance of the tires cannot be overemphasized for the AP1, due to its more raw handling characteristics. If you're going to drive this car 'hard', do it with the best tires – period. (It's not a matter of the 'best you can afford' – you cannot afford to do it on less than the best.)
In truth, I'd also view the original top as a liability – as it has the plastic window. I'd love to have an AP1 (along with my CR), and I'd pay more for lower miles – as long as the maintenance schedule (especially oil changes) followed the temporal needs rather than those imposed by mileage.

I was just saying that the car should still have the stock S02 tires if it really only has 9k miles on it. It would be a red flag if it had a set of worn out cheap tires at that mileage.
More power to ya if you have a strict tire replacement philosophy.

One of several stories regarding tire longevity:

BTW, my S2K's tires have a date code of late 2007 which means I will probably need to replace them, IMO, in early 2014 (I also believe in the 6 year policy). Based on my rate of running up mileage (I have nearly 5,400 miles on the car now), this will most likely be much sooner that than the tire's appearance would indicate.

Problem is the car is in serious need of help
-Soft top tears around left/right side corners where the door meets the car and it has been sitting out so the interior smells and I'm sure water has gotten down on the carpet
-Has aftermarket cloth bucket seats which are horrible
-Engine is misfiring on cylinders 1, 2, and 3(I cleared codes out, engine felt smooth after and I let it idle for about 15 minutes, did not test drive, no codes came back on from sitting there)
-Aftermarket vented carbon fiber hood which needs to be replaced. It felt like I lifted swiss cheese, hood was very weak and faded.
-Body paint is good except for left rear bumper has a rash on it, no biggie.
-Aftermarket wheels in decent shape, least of my concerns.
-Aftermarket exhaust, nothing ricey.
My buddy at work told me someone he knows is selling an s2000 for cheap, immediately I'm thinking this car is trashed, and it's close to it. My biggest problem is the misfire. I don't know how little or serious it is. I have new coil packs and plugs I can swap over to see if the engine runs fine, but right now that's a big if.
Assuming I can get the engine running normal with just spark plugs and coil packs do you think $6000 is a good price for an s2000 that'll need a new soft top with glass window(<$1000), new hood($400-$500), replace seats with oem($800), redo carpet(<$100), and pretty much do a thorough cleaning of the entire interior(dash and panels are all in good, but dirty condition, nothing's faded/cracked)
Again, assuming the engine itself is fine would this be something you'd consider? I felt so bad for the car when I hooked up my obd2 scanner to it, it needs someone that cares about it and has the $$$ to get her back in good shape and keep it that way.
I don't have that money at hand, but if it came down to it I can get a loan and have very affordable car payments.
So to me, if I can get the car for $5500(assuming engine is fine, otherwise I'm passing), then spend around $2000 to get the inside/top new again that would be a good deal. I can picture is happening, but it's just a matter of getting it there. I could either then keep the car or sell it as long as everything is good like it needs to be.
