Bill Gendron makes them too. I think they're a lot like Nicks home made jobbies.

Ya'll could just make them with about $200 in parts, a welder, and a set of spare CRX/Civic/S2000 tophats...
I did see yours and think you did a great job with them but I don't have a welder although I could have purchased one with the money spent on the top hats I'm sure.

Well, that sucks. I guess I won't be recommending the SOS top hats anymore. If I received a design like the red ones, I would return them and use the stock ones.

AST offers some that are similar to the gold ones:

I'm looking into AST's top hats, just waiting on pricing.

Looks like the Grassroots Motorsports MX5 went looking for extra horsepower spending all last week at Hypertech in Memphis. I didn't get any official figures but heard they were close to 100 hp less than a tuned S2000. The car weighed 2450 lbs at Blytheville last week.
What's the lightest s2000 in STR Trim? I'm down to 2695 with a 3/4 tank of gas.
I just have the exhaust cut off mod, and removal of my tool kit and spare... Oh, and the Tein SRC's weigh MUCH less than the stock shocks. I'm going to weigh them this weekend when we swap springs.

I even have the TR Motorsports wheels... and those aren't really "light weight."

**EDIT** I have a light weight battery which weighs 11.2 lbs. Unfortunately, I weigh 210lbs.... so Some weight reduction can be done there!

Depends on the scales. 2650 is probably about right for your average AP2 build. An all out go get every pound build will probably be near 2615-2620.

2000 AP1 and CR will be a touch lighter.

Ahhh the Cr... How did I forget about that? Without the hardtop I'd imagine you could get that thing down to 2550... Pretty sure it will end up being the class overdog. Especially with the MX5's only getting down to 2450.

Lurker Mode Off: Just for reference and for whatever its worth, the GRM/TireRack MX5 is a long way from being optimized for lightweight. Stock seats, steel body coilovers, 19.6# wheels, stock exhaust manifold with 90-92 dba exhaust etc. I will let you do the math, but 2450# is easy with a low cost parts build. Sub-2400 is very possible with some additional $$ or the 5-speed trans.

Awesome thread guys -

I highly doubt it.

I'll spot the CR 100lbs and it still won't be consistently faster than a base AP2. Its within driver noise. We're talking about less than 4% of the total weight of the car.

MX-5's will be knocking on the 2300lb door. Some of the West Coast ones already are.

Since the MX-5s start out at 2450, I suspect that's not the lightest they could be. To get to 2450, all you have to do is offset the extra weight of the wider wheels and tires.

My stock CR weighed 2748 with the top and tool kit removed and a little over 1/2 tank of gas on the scales at Blytheville. That's with TR wheels and 255 Hankooks and a Saner bar.
