-Official- Is this car worth it thread
$16k is a high pricetag for that year, plus suspicious history = probably not, but if it's what you want have a mechanic take a look over it and see if it checks out.
I wouldn't buy a yellow car personally, but as long as it's what you want. Keep in mind # of owners isn't really telling, the GPW could have had 4 great owners and the yellow 1 bad one.
The only used car guidance you need is a) Find what you want, b) Find what you can afford and c) Have it checked out by a mechanic. As long as the motor was treated well, these things are pretty much rock solid except for the diff. A notchy 2nd gear is pretty normal, but it shouldn't grind.

One thing to consider is white s2000's will always yield a higher price tag because they are sort of rare and yes Carmax will always put their prices high. There are pleny of s2000;s in the market right now if the white is to suspicious and the yellow is not your thing than just wait. Dont make a decision that you will regret. Buying a car is a big investment. Make sure its worth it.
16k is WAY overpriced. Let me put it into perspective.
I paid 18k for an '04 with 11,000 miles on it just 1 year ago.
As for the yellow one, don't buy it if you aren't in love with the color. You WILL regret the decision.

Hmm okay thanks. I was thinking that since I want an AP1, it would be difficult to find one I want right?
I suppose you guys are right about regretting the yellow one though.
I should be able to check out the white car in a week or two, so I guess if it doesn't look or feel right, then I will just wait for another one. Are there really that many of them on the market? I feel like low mile AP1s are hard to come by.
If it looks fine, then it should be alright even though it had 3/4 previous owners right? I mean each of the owners owned it for at least 2 years, although I think it's probably in my best interest to have it inspected by a mechanic.
Thanks for all the help guys!

So I'm close to deciding what kind of S2000 I'll be buying. I'm trying to decide between an AP1 or an 06+ AP2. I want the car to be fairly low mileage (maybe between 25k-50k miles, ideally about 40k) and in very good shape although not necessarily perfect cosmetically. I plan to build it for autocross in the STR class, so either some bolt on modifications or stock would be fine.
I like certain things about both cars, so I think price is going to be the determining factor. It's hard to figure out what these cars actually go for, and that's a big part of my decision. With low mileage AP1's in particular, asking prices seem to be all over the map. How much should i expect to pay if I'm patient and willing to wait for the next 6 months or so for the right deal and willing to go anywhere within maybe a 15 hour drive of Philly?
Doing Edmunds TMV, private party values for "clean" condition (which is the 2nd highest condition) are as follows:
2003 w/ 40k miles: $12,350
2006 w/ 40k miles: $17,690
If I change to "Excellent condition" (the highest), then the values go to:
2003 w/ 40k miles: $13,120
2006 w/ 40k miles: $18,810
If anyone has experience recently buying either an 02-03 or an 06-07, do these values seem about right to you? Is there another online tool that's more accurate if not? What did you pay?
Thanks for any input!

Obviously there will be variables...but those numbers seem like they're in the right area. For comparison...I bought an '05 with 45k miles in borderline "good/excellent" condition and it was 16,800 (private party)...this was about six weeks ago.
Just out of curiosity... I understand where some people have hang-ups about getting '00/'01s, but why don't you want an '04/'05?

I'm currently shopping as well and I think those prices are about right. I haven't seen the right deal, and I promised the spousal unit that I would try to wait until spring. I don't see ever going over 1 grand for any AP1, not matter how low the mileage. I have settled on 2004 to 2005 and expct around 16 grand at this point.
