And I'm not sure how you can make the statement that there is a higher demand for them on ebay, at auction, etc. when you have no statistical data supporting that. How do you know how many calls a dealer is getting on their GPW they have on their lot as opposed to their Silverstone? You don't.
My statistical data is my experience. Watching s2k sales regularly I've noticed the number of bids on a car, number of watchers/bidders(whether on ebay, manheim, adesa, iaai or copart), and having seen higher prices for GPW over other colors when they're in similar condition I've come to that conclusion.

ps. I own a used car dealer so I may know a thing or two.

2001

49k miles

Bone stock

No accidents (still need to run a check to make sure)

Car apparently is in *mint* condition. 1 owner, very well taken care of. Only issue with it is there is a patched 6" long slice in the hard top from an angry gf, apparently.

We haggled over price, seller is willing to go down to $12,800 but not a penny more. Fair deal? I almost feel like that's a little high because it's the middle of winter in December, yet no one really seems to understand that KBB's already inflated value doesn't really hold much weight when it's 10* and snowing outside.

KBB's values are skewed and ridiculous and have been for a couple of years now with regards to the S2000 specifically. Nada and Edmunds are much more reliable sources.

I'm confused though about the "need to run a check" to make sure it has no accidents. Why not physically go look at the car yourself and confirm that it has all ten VIN stickers in place? Then if some are missing you'll know not only that it isn't in mint condition but you can then run the check to see if there is any mention as to the severity of the accident.

Yep I agree, though Edmunds has the opposite problem in that their numbers are way too low (often puts 01-03 S2k's in the 7k range). NADA seems the most realistic. Really annoying how everyone with an s2k for sale right now is saying "PRICED A THOUSAND BELOW KBB FOR QUICK SALE!!!" and won't budge a dollar. I'm like, dude.. it's the middle of December and you're still asking for more than the car is really worth. KBB isn't realistic at all.

Also, I can't just check the VINs because most cars I'm looking at are ~4+ hour drives from me. I'm not going to make that drive until I have a deal lined up and the car checks out. of course I'll check it out in person, but I'm not going to trust pictures and a seller's word before I make the drive.

A car is worth whatever anyone is willing to pay for it. So if it is really priced too high, then no one will rush to buy it and the seller will either lower the price or will wait for a buyer who will pay. So maybe if you are patient, the price will come down. Or not.

Re CarFax and AutoCheck: those are helpful (might save you from making a drive to see a car that is a long distance away), but they don't always have all of the info. In my last used car purchase, I used both because I found that sometimes one had info the other didn't. I also found that both would sometimes show a car as having no accidents on record yet I could tell pretty clearly the car I was looking at had been in some kind of accident.

Best wishes!

Ok, I think this might be the last time I bug you guys.

01 S2000
51k miles
1 owner
No accidents, matching VINs
Immaculate condition - everything on the car looks new except one dent on the hood - emailed a PDR guy near me and he told me it was an easy fix for ~$75-100
Color combination I want - finally no more yellow or bright red cars
100% stock

$12,000

Guy is willing to let me take it to a shop and have it checked over. Pending a clean autocheck and good compression numbers/everything looks good to the shop, I think this is a done deal. The car looks immaculate, it's completely stock, fairly low-mileage, and the seller writes intelligently, so I know he's not an immature kid like 99% of the S2k sellers I talk to on CL. Fair deal, yeah?

That is certainly fair, if everything checks out go for it! 1 owner is very hard to find on those early model years nowadays.
