I ran in Phoenix yesterday in AS on 2 year old 225(4) 710s and did okay. What was impressive was a guy that ran a really fast time in an STR 99 Miata during fun runs (TO). See results sorted by time below. The first three positions are past national champions, 4th is the STR Miata, and 5th is my best run in AS. The best ST drivers are decent, but certainly not national champ level.
BTW the Miata was running on 15x9 949 wheels and 245 Hancook RS-3s. I don't know what springs or shocks, but I could find out if anyone is interested.

STX, STU, STR, HS ran on a wet surface in the first run group.

So let me get this straight, because looking at the results, there's more to this story.
So the guy that got a wicked fast time in the STR 99 Miata, actually runs a CSP 93 Miata, where he finished midpack. Then for fun runs, he jumps into someone else's STR 99 Miata, where he goes FASTER than his CSP time? Am I missing something? Were the weather conditions for the top 3 guys vastly different than the guy that ran the fun runs in the STR car?
Either we don't have the whole story, weather was a huge factor, or we're screwed.
Those results are bizarre and I'm sure they have no bearing on National, same conditions type results. I mean, the Killer STR miata was only .6 faster than a Celica in ST (albeit on a 30 second course). I'm pretty sure that means it's over a second or more slower than a national caliber ST car... which isn't going to get it done by a long shot.
I would like to hear from Clint Child on this. He has been very fast in his STU car, and was slower than the Miata. Conditions/rain? I doubt I could straight time Clint in my MX5.
Edit: What PAX factor did they use?

In San Francisco Region during the 6 slush series events, we've had several good drivers in nationally prepared Civics in ST, and several good drivers running AS S2000s on street tires.
ST drivers have been Heyward Wagner and Charlie Davis driving Charlie Davis' car ("Rat"), and Cliff Fong, Mike Hsu, and Bryan Heitkotter driving Cliff Fong's car ("Team Go Green").
T1-AS drivers have been Alex Muresan driving his car on Kumho XS 225/255, Zach Heidepriem driving the car he bought from Joe Tharpe on Bridgestone RE-01R 225/245 (I think), and me driving my car on Dunlop Z1* 225/255.
STR is going to be faster than ST, and maybe the S2000 isn't going to be as slow on street tires as I had expected.

Code:
Rnd ST T1-AS Note
1 65.6 65.3 Candlestick Park, elevation changes and loose grit.
2 42.0 42.0 Golden Gate Fields, loose grit. A bit cleaner for the T1-AS group, which ran 2 groups later.
3 51.1 51.5 Marina airport on flat concrete
4 57.2 59.0 Heitkotter is an alien. Fastest humans in ST cars were Mike Hsu and Heyward, 58.9 which took 2nd place PAX.
Oakland Coliseum, typical asphalt parking lot
5 40.8 41.8 Small sample set, just Charlie vs. me. Marina airport. Long run group for T1-AS = cold tires
6 44.8 45.2 Oakland Coliseum.

Matt was co-driving the csp car, because his 99miata str car was totalled a few weeks earlier. The csp car (Brian Peter's old NA) was a bit fast for Matt to handle, at least that's what he told me.
FWIW, Clint and Brian P. ran in the third heat. Matt's fun run was the 5th run group.
Yep.
It's got a K+N to make nice noise and I'm revving to 8800 via flashpro. Vtec comes on at 5500. I'm pretty sure that the AP1 will not be able to compete. The midrange power and gearing is fantastic although I can only go 63mph in 2nd at 8800rpm.
