a ap1 redline with ap2 tunning would be the car to "have" but until we are allowed to tune its going to be a course dependent thing.

The ap1's will win on the fast courses and the ap2s will win on the tight courses. Although thats just comparing the two s2000's. we have to remember everyone got beat by a miata at nationals

SO the real question is why did the miata beat a s2000 and how can we be sure to not let it happen again?

An ap1 with a 9300 rpm redline and tuning to get ap2 like tq would be "da sex"

As far as I hear, Ken Motonoshi would have won if he was driving a kia.

You just need to learn how to drive to win! Get a basic setup that is decent and get lots of seat time. Take Evo school Phase 1 and 2. Become one with your car and use the force! Seriously your driving needs to become subconscious (second nature). If you are consciously thinking while driving you will never get there.

It sure is fun to talk car setup to the nth degree, but 90% or more comes down to the driver IMO.

You can get into the top 10% with some effort, the top 1% with total dedication/$, and the top 0.1% if you are born with the talent (you are an "alien").

Here's a video from yesterday on a very fun and challenging course. If you cannot down shift in an S2000 you are screwed, especially an AP1.

Sept 19, 2010 - Fastest Raw Time 66.2 sec +1 at Marana Airport, Tucson, AZ

Course map, runs clockwise.
That looks like a super fun course.

I don't know about this Ken Motonoshi guy, but Ken MOTONISHI couldn't drive a Kia: too much car for him.

You just described an AP206+

Um no. There's no advantage that an AP1 has over the AP206+, so AP1s will not win the fast courses. The playing field gets more level (still favors AP2). Slower courses the AP1 will be out of VTACK and fall on their face.

Miatas are fast because they have a much better tire/weight ratio. They run the same tires but weigh 300-400 less. That's why I advocated not to include them in STR. But that's water under the bridge.

Why would the AP1 need a 9300 rpm redline???

I couldn't imagine this class not including the Miata. That's ridiculous. Every car has it's inherent advantages/disadvantages... just something you have to deal with in the sandbox.

Any year S2000 can get it done in STR in my opinion. It's very clear that some S2000 competitors brought their 'A' game a few weeks ago while others didn't... myself included.
